Dog Days of Summer

So this is the last week of the Monster’s day camp.  Next week is the gap week between camp and school, and then we’re back into the school year.

Originally, we were trying to figure out what we’d do next week, having both R and the Monster home, and were wracking our brains as to find something to keep them both occupied, bearing in mind that R needs to have a nap mid-day, and the Monster might not do well with further disruptions to his schedule… Continue reading

Outputs

As I’ve mentioned a few times, we’re nearly done with the Monster’s first real summer at day-camp.  (To give you an idea of how deep into the summer we are, Color War began at their camp today.)

I’ll admit that I’m not really sure what he’s getting out of the summer, but that’s not really the goal of the entire operation, is it. Continue reading

Breaking Patterns

With only two more weeks of camp, and then a week off before school, the order of the school year can’t come soon enough.

The Monster, like many children, does better when there’s an established rhythm to his week.  He does better with the clearer order of the school year than he does with camp, and it’s showing as we’re trying to at least make a good-faith effort as school prep stuff. Continue reading

Summer Concerns

So we made it through most of the weekend without the Monster having an accident.  (We had two – one at the game and one on the ride home – but by and large, it was a successful weekend during the waking hours.)

This is after a week where he’s had few enough accidents at camp as well – of course there’s always the chance he’s just peeing in the pool – and we’ve been feeling very good about the whole thing.  At least that was until the wife was checking his bag this morning and realized that the Mio in it is still nearly full. Sensory Guesses

Summer is in full swing here, obviously, if you’ve not been paying attention to the oodles of posts about the Monster and summer camp.

That and the fact that it’s been hot as hell all week (at least in terms of how such gets in Maryland) with multiple days in a row of 90F temperatures and seventy-something percent humidity. Continue reading

When Days are Hot

I, myself, really prefer winter.  There’s just a heck of a lot more you can do about being cold than you can about being hot, and besides, you don’t often get all disgusting because of the cold.

Unfortunately, it’s not winter now.  It’s summer, and here in Maryland, that means absolutely disgustingly hot and humid when it gets into full swing. Continue reading

Fillers

For some strange reason, we have a week off between camp and school on either side of the summer break.

When I was a kid, the camps were basically set up to start the week after school ended, and then we had two weeks after camp before school resumed.  (Our camp also offered a ninth-week program for those parents who didn’t want to have us lingering around the house.)  This meant that parents had a good stretch of time to plan for, rather than having to fill two smaller periods… Continue reading

Winding Down

The school year ends next week.  At the moment, the last day is supposedly Wednesday, but the pre-K “moving up” ceremony is Monday, so we’re not entirely sure that the Monster actually has school after that.

It’s been an interesting year, that’s for certain.  He’s been doing fine and keeping pace with his pre-academics, as they refer to the course load at his grade level, even if he’s not necessarily gaining much ground on the other skills that he’s delayed in. Continue reading
