The program that the Monster is in – Together We Grow – is geared largely to provide the standard public pre-K experience in a classroom environment that’s also built to help children with Autism start to develop skills they’ll need in a real classroom.  As such, he gets the same assignments any pre-K child in Maryland gets, including all of the homework. Homework Blues

No child likes to do homework.

The Monster’s class at his public school is, for all intents and purposes, a standard pre-kindergarten environment.  This means that they follow the standard pre-K curriculum here in Baltimore, and he gets homework like the other students, adapted for what he is and isn’t capable of doing. Back to School

So last night was the back to school night for the Monster.

I have to admit that I wasn’t ready for this quite yet – I’d figured that we had at least a year, maybe two, before we’d be doing this… but there we were, sitting in the gym of an elementary/middle school listening to the principal and whatnot.  And it felt about as weird as we expected. Not Quite the Magic Schoolbus

Sorry for not posting as usual this weekend – I decided to take a break and spend as much of it with my family as I could, rather than worrying about blogging. 🙂

Anyway.  So, I wrote last week about our disaster with bussing (see I Aim to Misbehave) on Tuesday afternoon.  I was very happy, as I wrote, with the school system’s response to the issue and how they took me seriously when I complained about it. Continue reading
