Snowday

We’re into the fifth day of our ‘long’ weekend at this point, once you consider the snow storm that hit us yesterday and kept us at home.

Yesterday, with the snow coming down, the Monster started insisting that he wanted to go outside and play.  I said no immediately due to the fact that it was windy and still snowing, but I’d mentioned that I’d be more amenable today, weather permitting.  As I also mentioned, we’re out of things for him to be doing inside, save for perhaps his project due on Monday. Idle Time

Schools were cancelled here today due to the predicted weather and for once, the weather predictions panned out.  I would not have wanted the Monster to have gone to school in this weather… and I wouldn’t have wanted to have had to go get him if they’d closed early.

There is, however, a different problem – a lack of other things to do. Continue reading

Baby, It’s Cold Outside

Between last week and this week, we’ve been caught in something that feels a little bit like The Day After Tomorrow, even if it’s hardly living up to that kind of cinematic hype.

Despite the snow, the Monster didn’t get a chance really to go play in it.  On Friday, it was entirely too cold for the kids to get out into it – it was bone-chillingly cold, and they don’t really tend to like to be too bundled up… or at least to wear gloves. Continue reading

Time For Gymnastics!

Folks have asked me what the Monster actually does when we go to gymnastics each week.   I’ve mentioned before about how he goes every Thursday, but I don’t talk too much about what he actually does when he’s there.  And… I don’t necessarily want folks having this image in their heads that my kid’s getting ready eventually for the Olympics. On the Road – Port Discovery

So yesterday, there was a deal with the Smithsonian Museums and their affiliates for free entry.  Never ones to pass up a deal, we signed up to go to Port Discovery, the local children’s museum here in Baltimore.

(Yesterday was a whole bunch of free, since we also had lunch at a nearby, newly-opening Red Robin… but that’s beside the point.  We like Red Robin, if only because bottomless fries == distracted children with full mouths.) Continue reading

On the Road – Surfers Healing and the Autism Beach Bash

So… I’m sure that a lot of parents of children with Autism who are already “in the know” about this could potentially be annoyed with me for divulging the existence of this, due to the limited spots available each year.  But.. if you don’t know about this already, you should.  Trust me, you should.

There is this great charity out there called Surfers Healing.  Surfers Healing is a charity founded by a former competitive surfer who has a son with Autism.  The basis of the charity is sharing his discovery of the effect that riding a surfboard has on children with this disorder.

Surprises

So, as I mentioned on the tweet feed last night, obviously I didn’t post yesterday because we were busy – we decided to take advantage of the long weekend to make another run up to Sesame Place.

The morning started out ominous.  We’d made the decision (albeit, with me pushing it) to go to the renfaire on Sunday instead of Monday as originally planned, due to the threat of rain.  Let’s be honest – it’s little fun running around the faux-16th Century in the rain, trying to push a stroller through the mud while managing multiple children.  Instead… it ended up pouring while we drove up to Langhorne, to the point that we were dreadfully concerned that it wouldn’t be proper weather for enjoying the park. Let’em Stare

If you’ve ever wondered how children with Autism would have been seen in the Middle Ages… well, a renfaire really is probably at least as close as you’ll get to the concept.

We enjoy going to the Maryland Renaissance Festival.  We’ve been hitting it since before we had kids, and even now with children, we still try to go at least once a year to enjoy the sights. Continue reading

Playing at Normalcy

I spent six years living in south Texas, and never managed to go wandering up to Dallas for the state fair.  Somehow, I’ve managed to go wandering a few times now to the Maryland State Fair since I moved here.

I’m not a huge fan of the state fair – it’s fun enough, I suppose, when you’re going to see one of the concerts or you’re exhibiting, but unless you’re going to go ride rides and pig out on food there, it’s really just a lot of walking and way, way too many people. Continue reading
