New Tricks

Chalk this up as one of those things that you only really notice as a signpost of how far someone’s come.

The Monster’s been a picky eater for a while now – when he was a baby, he’d eat just about anything that was put in front of him.  Today, his diet’s far more limited, and it’s usually a guessing game as to what he’ll eat (though, at least, we know he’ll almost universally accept chicken fingers when we go out to eat…) Continue reading

A Different Tactic

I wrote last week about the fact that the Monster’s diet is getting more and more restrictive of late (see Dwindling Options).  On Saturday, I took him to the doctor for his annual checkup.

(Fortunately, he didn’t have to get any shots, was generally cooperative and only resisted when the nurse wanted him to do a hearing test… but we’re not worried really about his hearing, so.) Continue reading

Dwindling Options

I’ve written before about how the Monster’s a picky eater, I know.  And, for the longest time, this has been a larger concern for my wife than it’s been for me.

By and large, I don’t care what he eats, as long as he does get his nutrition so he can be healthy and happy.  This is also with the fact that he does take a supplemental multi-vitamin with breakfast, so we’re sure that he’s at least getting the minimums when it comes to vitamins and minerals… but that doesn’t speak perhaps to the caloric count. Narrowing It Down

The Monster’s not really the adventurous eating type, and I know I’ve commented on that at various points on the blog.  He was, of course, when he was a baby – like most babies, he ate just about anything you put in front of him – but as his Autism really came into force, his dietary habits have somewhat slimmed down.

One thing I’m still getting used to is how they can keep narrowing, even after that initial onset. Continue reading

Changing Tastes

The Monster is, as anyone who’s seen him can testify, a very healthy child.  Our biggest issue with keeping him such, though, is the fact that he lives on a very limited diet.

I’ve spoken before of the fact that he tends to be a very picky eater.  It’s rarely predictable what he’s going to be willing to eat on a given day – we can take guesses based on past performance, but other than that, he’s only happy within a very limited range. Continue reading
